‘The main thing is people's lives’: the president on reforming driving schools and improving the quality of driver training

President Sadyr Zhaparov, in an interview with the state agency Kabar, commented on the issue of closing private driving schools and creating state-run ones.

The president noted that most private driving schools were not interested in providing quality driver training. Their main goal was to make money. People submitted documents, received certificates and were able to obtain licences without even passing the exams.

"Corruption schemes operated alongside the state structure “Unaa”. Practical and theoretical exams were easy to pass because it was possible to buy a licence. Now we have brought order to Unaa and established strict control. Graduates of private driving schools now fail their exams several times", — said the president.

The head of state also explained that there are various reasons for road accidents, but the main one is poor training. In Kyrgyzstan, more than 900 people die in traffic accidents every year, and in some years, more than a thousand.

Sadyr Zhaparov also noted that state driving schools have all the necessary conditions: modern facilities, updated equipment, and qualified specialists.

He also stressed that the owners of private driving schools had been warned in advance that licences would be revoked from 2026, but that specialists would not be left without work, as they would be accepted into state schools.

The president also said that from September this year, traffic safety lessons would be taught in schools across the country.
