The use of the names of the heroes of the Manas epic is now regulated by law

A law regulating the use of the names of the heroes of the Manas epic in the names of objects and products has come into force in Kyrgyzstan.

According to the new legislation, the names of characters from the epic may be used only if authorised by the Cabinet of Ministers. This applies to the names of objects in state, municipal, private and other forms of ownership, as well as products manufactured by these objects.

The Law also includes measures for the development of the creativity of manaschi, traditional performers of the epic, including the establishment of manaschi schools and the development of educational programmes and teaching aids for the study of the Manas epic in educational institutions. Particular attention is paid to protecting the texts of the epic from distortion and to preserving ancient manuscripts and archaeological finds related to the epic.

In addition, measures are envisaged to ensure the preservation of monuments and cultural property related to Manas and to protect Kyrgyzstan's interests in respect of these objects abroad. The law is aimed at strengthening the country's cultural heritage and introducing the younger generation to the values of the epic.
