Which industry in Kyrgyzstan will be least affected by climate change

According to World Bank forecasts, climate change in Kyrgyzstan by 2050 will bring both benefits and risks to the country's economy. The main gains are expected in hydropower: electricity production could increase by 11% thanks to increased flow in the Naryn, Talas and Chu rivers.

However, experts warn of negative consequences. The country's glaciers continue to retreat — by the middle of the century, their area will shrink by almost half, and the seasonality of river flow is changing: peak water discharge is observed a month earlier. The increase in river sediment inflow to the Kambarata HPP-1 may reduce the efficiency of hydropower facilities.

The changes will be painful for agriculture. Intense rainfall and land degradation will lead to an 11% increase in soil loss on arable land and an 8% increase on pastures. Experts emphasise that the benefits to some industries will inevitably be accompanied by increased costs for others, and that adaptation to new climatic conditions is becoming critically important.
