Kyrgyzstan is ready to sell electricity to neighbouring countries

A republican meeting was held in Kyrgyzstan to discuss the results of socio-economic development for 2025. The focus was on the construction of the Kambar-Ata-1 hydroelectric power plant and the large-scale modernisation of existing hydroelectric power plants.

Chaired by Sadyr Zhaparov, the national meeting summarised the country's socio-economic development and outlined plans for the coming years. One of the key areas was energy.

The main strategic project is the construction of the Kambar-Ata-1 hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 1,860 megawatts. Once commissioned, it will be the largest energy facility in the history of Kyrgyzstan. The project is expected to fully cover the country's domestic electricity needs and enable exports, strengthening the energy security of the entire region.

At the same time, the authorities have focused on modernising the existing infrastructure. Most of the hydroelectric power plants were built in the 1950s-1970s and have not undergone a full upgrade for decades, despite continuous operation.

Over the past four years, large-scale reconstruction has been carried out, including at the Toktogul hydroelectric power plant. Four units were completely replaced here, increasing the plant's capacity by 240 megawatts and extending its service life by another 50-60 years.

In addition, 28 small hydroelectric power plants were built and commissioned in the country. According to the authorities' estimates, without these systemic solutions, Kyrgyzstan risked facing an electricity shortage, which could have significantly limited economic growth.

The authorities believe that the combination of new projects and the modernisation of existing facilities forms the basis for the country's long-term energy independence and its transformation into an electricity exporter.
