Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan launched a new phase of the CASA-1000 project

On 31 March 2025, during a working visit to the city of Khujand, President Sadyr Zhaparov and President of Tajikistan Emomali Rakhmon participated in the ceremony of launching the 500 kV Datka-Sugd line as part of the large-scale regional CASA-1000 project. The ceremony was held via videoconference.

Before the launch of the line, the energy ministers of the two countries reported on the full readiness for the launch of the 500 kV Datka-Sugd overhead line. With the help of a demonstration lever, the heads of state gave the start of the launch, emphasising the importance of this stage of the project. The leaders noted that the CASA-1000 project is of strategic importance for both countries, as it not only connects the energy systems of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, but also contributes to strengthening the energy security of the region.

Completion of construction work on the project in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is scheduled for 2025. The project will ensure the export of green electricity from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to Afghanistan and Pakistan during the summer period.

The CASA-1000 project included the construction of new power facilities such as a 500 kV transmission line, about 480 kilometres long, from the Datka Substation in Kyrgyzstan to the Sughd Substation in Tajikistan. In Kyrgyzstan, 1,243 poles were installed and 456 kilometres of line were constructed. An additional 500 kV cell was also built at the Datka substation. The line passes through Jalal-Abad, Osh and Batken oblasts and ends at the border with Tajikistan.
