China and Russia together account for over 60% of Kyrgyzstan's imports

Import statistics increasingly answer the simple question of what Kyrgyzstan really needs to keep its economy alive. Judging by the structure of imports, the answer is very specific: China and Russia.

In the third quarter of 2025, total imports to Kyrgyzstan amounted to $2.85 billion. Of this, $1.14 billion came from China and another $587 million from Russia. In total, this amounts to about $1.73 billion, or more than 60% of the country's total imports.

In fact, these two countries cover most of the republic's needs for foreign goods, from industrial products and equipment to consumer goods, raw materials, and components.

For comparison:

  • Kazakhstan provided $268 million in imports;
  • Uzbekistan — $164 million;
  • Turkey — $82 million;
  • the US – $48 million;
  • Germany – $45 million.

All other suppliers, including the EU, the Middle East, and Asia, together account for less than China alone.

If China and Russia are removed from Kyrgyzstan's foreign trade, imports will fall by more than half.

China is a key source of:

  • consumer goods,
  • electronics,
  • equipment,
  • and raw materials for processing.

Russia is a systemic supplier of:

  • fuel and energy carriers,
  • food,
  • industrial goods,
  • and intermediate products.

Other countries play a supplementary role rather than a fundamental one.

Formally, Kyrgyzstan trades with “the whole world.” In reality, however, its import model is extremely concentrated. Diversification, which is often discussed in strategies and programs, appears limited in terms of figures.
