The Ministry of Economy of the Kyrgyz Republic refuted data on a 10,000% increase in trade with Europe

The Kyrgyz Ministry of Economy and Trade issued a statement in response to media reports based on Brookings Institution analysis about the alleged sharp increase in Kyrgyzstan's foreign trade turnover with a number of European countries.

The ministry emphasized that the data cited in foreign media about a 10,000% increase in exports from Estonia, Finland by 3,100%, Poland and Greece by more than 2,000%, and Norway, the UK, Germany, and the Czech Republic by more than 1,000% “do not correspond to reality.”

According to official statistics, between 2019 and 2024, trade turnover with Estonia increased by 300% (from $1.5 million to $4.5 million), with Poland by 231.5% (from $26 million to $60.2 million), and with Germany by 323.4% (from $79.4 million to $256.8 million).

The ministry noted that the growth in indicators is associated with an increase in trade volumes in both physical and value terms, as well as with the diversification of imports of consumer goods that are not included in the list of controlled products. At the same time, absolute trade volumes remain relatively low.

In addition, the increase in imports of certain product groups is due to the modernization of equipment, expansion of production capacities, and growth in domestic demand from key sectors of the economy, such as mining, energy, agriculture, machine building, and construction.

Official foreign trade data is published on the website of the National Statistical Committee of the Kyrgyz Republic and is available for open analysis. The agency has called on the media to rely on verified statistics and avoid incorrect interpretations.
