05/10/2025, 09:07Today, May 10, the Kyrgyz som turns 32 years old. It was on this day in 1993 that Kyrgyzstan introduced its own national currency, which has become an essential symbol of the country’s independence and sovereignty. Over the years, the som has established itself as one of the most stable currencies in the region and has received international recognition for its design and security features.
There are many interesting facts about Kyrgyz banknotes that are not widely known. For example, the average lifespan of a banknote can reach up to 8 years. Each note contains more than 30 security elements, some of which remain undisclosed. The new series of banknotes introduced in 2023 was recognized as the Best New Banknote Series of 2023 in the international “Banknote of the Year” competition. Coins in denominations of 1, 3, 5, and 10 soms are made of steel and coated with nickel.
When banknotes reach the end of their life, they don’t go to waste — they’re used in the process of brick firing after disposal. A som banknote can withstand up to 5,000 double folds, and the ink used remains intact even after washing in hot water. In short, the Kyrgyz som is a resilient currency that can endure many challenges — but let’s still treat it with care, respect, and appreciation!
