Domestic cement producers complain about importers of foreign raw materials

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Kyrgyz Republic has received an appeal from local cement producers requesting the Cabinet of Ministers' intervention to address the problem with a sharp increase in cement imports at dumping prices.

Kyrgyzstan's cement industry has demonstrated stable growth in recent years, providing the domestic market with quality products. However, the emergence of cheap cement from neighbouring markets has threatened the stability of domestic enterprises, which actively invest in modernisation and provide jobs.

According to the CCI, the current situation threatens not only the competitiveness of producers, but also tax revenues to the country's budget. The problem is aggravated by the fact that some unscrupulous importers underestimate the cost of goods in order to evade taxes, as well as use smuggling schemes.

To address the situation, the CCI proposed several measures: setting a control price level, continuing restrictions on import of cement by road during the warm period and mandatory use of domestic cement in major government projects.
