09/24/2025, 09:43Unjustified sanctions are regarded as interference in the internal affairs of the country and as pressure that hinders the development of an economy that is still in its infancy. This was noted by the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Sadyr Zhaparov, speaking at the General Debate of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
The head of state stressed that Kyrgyzstan is making every effort to strengthen its economy independently. He emphasised that Kyrgyzstan has strictly fulfilled and will continue to fulfil its international obligations.
‘However, we cannot sacrifice the interests of our citizens and the economic development of the country!’ the head of state declared.
He noted that the sanctions imposed on Kyrgyzstan are based on false information disseminated by certain non-governmental organisations and unscrupulous citizens. In this regard, President Sadyr Zhaparov said that the state is ready to accept independent international audits to thoroughly check the activities of Kyrgyz banks.
He pointed out that in 2024, European Union countries traded with Russia for $141 billion, of which $36 billion was imports from Russia. The United Kingdom, which imposed sanctions on two of our banks, traded with Russia for $2.2 billion in the same year. In this regard, he noted that some countries reserve the right to cooperate with Russia, defending their own interests, but prohibit others from doing so.
‘You demand that we do not cooperate with Russia, but you yourselves are actively developing trade and economic ties with it. We have much more economic relations with Russia than you do,’ the head of state emphasised.
Therefore, the president noted that, in economic terms, Kyrgyzstan cannot refuse to cooperate with Russia. President Sadyr Zhaparov added that Kyrgyzstan does not seek confrontation with others, but cooperates with practically the whole world, pursuing a multi-vector policy. He noted that, for example, Kyrgyzstan sells $1 billion worth of gold to England every year.
‘My primary responsibility as President of the country is to ensure the security of my citizens and the country, as well as to improve their economic situation,’ Sadyr Zhaparov said.
