Bishkek has abandoned the idea of relocating a cemetery to make way for road construction

The Bishkek municipality will not relocate the cemetery at the intersection of Korsakov and Profsoyuznaya streets in the Novopavlovka district, despite plans to develop the street network. The mayor's office said the decision was made after a sanitary and epidemiological risk assessment.

Previously, the option of building a road through the burial grounds was considered. According to city services' calculations, this would require the reburial of about 1,360 graves — 227 Muslim and 1,137 Christian. At the same time, burials on the site would continue until 2024.

The Center for State Sanitary and Epidemiological Surveillance warned of possible soil contamination and the risk of spreading infections when opening the graves. Referring to the requirements of the law “On Public Health,” the agency did not recommend carrying out excavation work.

As a result, the city abandoned the plan to relocate the cemetery. The city administration emphasized that further decisions on the construction of the street would be made taking into account sanitary restrictions and current legislation, urging residents to refer to official announcements.
