04/28/2026, 18:23Construction of a cascade of hydroelectric power stations and associated energy facilities has officially begun in the village of Kanysh-Kya in the Chatkal District. The project includes a small hydroelectric power station, a solar power station and significant investments designed to strengthen the region’s energy grid.
The project involves the construction of a cascade of hydroelectric power stations, a small 5 MW hydroelectric power station and a 1 MW solar power station in the villages of Kanysh-Kya and Zhany-Bazar. The initiative aims to reduce the electricity deficit, decrease dependence on imports and develop the region’s energy infrastructure.
Construction is being carried out as a public-private partnership, with approximately $8 million invested in the initial phase and a total investment of $259.8 million.
The project launch ceremony was attended by the President’s Plenipotentiary Representative in the Jalal-Abad Region, Tilek Tekebaev; the scientific director of the hydroelectric power plant cascade, Akylbek Zhaparov; representatives of the Chinese company SINOMACH; as well as local authorities and residents of the Chatkal District.
The project is being launched against a backdrop of rising energy consumption in Kyrgyzstan and periodic power shortages, particularly during the autumn and winter months. The authorities are relying on small hydropower plants and solar generation as faster and more flexible solutions for the regions.
