Almost 3% of arable land remains unused in Kyrgyzstan: Talas and Naryn lead the way

In 2025, the area of arable land in Kyrgyzstan amounted to 1 million 292.9 thousand hectares, of which 1 million 245.6 thousand hectares were sown. At the same time, 40,100 hectares, or 3.1% of the total area, remained unused, which is 1,100 hectares more than last year.

The area used for perennial fruit and berry plantations amounted to 25,600 hectares (2% of the total arable land), fallow land (land left to ‘rest’ for one season) — 2,000 hectares, and protected ground — 64 hectares.

The highest percentage of unused arable land was recorded in:

  1. Talas region — 24.7%
  2. Naryn region — 19.2%
  3. Chui region — 15.3%
  4. Batken region — 11.6%
  5. Jalal-Abad region — 11%

The main reasons for land idleness are:

  • Severe bogara (lack of moisture in spring) — 19,700 hectares (49.1%)
  • Irrigation network malfunction — 6.1 thousand hectares (15.2%)
  • Remoteness and stoniness — 4.7 thousand hectares (11.7%)
  • Allocation for industrial and urban facilities — 7.9 thousand hectares (19.7%)
