07/16/2025, 13:51Kyrgyzstan intends to become self-sufficient in vegetable seeds. To this end, the construction of nine ‘smart’ greenhouses is nearing completion, and seeds of onions, Korean peppers and cucumbers are being actively tested.
The aim of the testing is to reduce dependence on imported vegetable seeds, strengthen local production, and create a sustainable vegetable seed supply system by improving quality and developing breeding infrastructure.
Deputy Prime Minister Bakyt Torobaev familiarised himself with the work being carried out at the centre. The official opening of the centre is scheduled for September 2025.
Vegetable seed testing is carried out at the Educational and Scientific Centre for Vegetable Seed Production at the Skryabin Kyrgyz National Agrarian University. The total cost of the project is $3.485 million.
