10/29/2025, 13:44Today, 29 October, a historic event took place in the agricultural sector of Kyrgyzstan: a hybridisation nursery was established to breed new varieties of winter wheat, which will become a key link in the development of domestic selection.
The event was organised by the Department of Agricultural Crops and Horticulture, the Kyrgyz Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture, and Alexander Borovik, Chief Researcher, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, and Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The work is being carried out in cooperation with the Russian National Grain Centre. As part of the project, eight new varieties of winter wheat, one variety of winter triticale and one variety of winter barley were brought to Kyrgyzstan from Russia, which will form the basis for future hybridisation research.
«The creation of the nursery will open up new prospects for domestic farmers — based on the results of the selection work, it is planned to breed new Kyrgyz varieties of winter wheat adapted to the conditions of a changing climate and the characteristics of local soils. This is an important step in strengthening the country's food security, increasing crop yields and developing scientific potential in the field of agricultural technology», — said Bakyt Mambetov, director of the Department of Agricultural Crops and Horticulture.
Alexander Borovik noted that the new varieties will be sustainable, high-yielding and optimally adapted to the country's natural and climatic conditions.
This event will mark the beginning of a new stage in the development of agricultural science and practical farming in Kyrgyzstan.
