Drought-resistant alfalfa varieties are being tested in Zhayil rayon

International trials of new drought-resistant varieties of alfalfa have started at the seed farm «Nur-Cholpon» in the Jaiyl district of Chui oblast.

Researchers from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Australia are participating in the scientific work, the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture and Processing Industry reported.

The trials are being conducted to select alfalfa varieties that can adapt to local climatic conditions, including periods of drought. Such varieties should provide a stable yield of high-quality forage, which is especially important for livestock development in a changing climate.
The ministry notes that the introduction of successful samples will help Kyrgyz farmers improve production efficiency and agricultural sustainability in the long term. During meetings with international partners, further stages of the project were discussed, including expanding the geography of the trials and possible dissemination of promising varieties among local producers.

Such research projects lay a solid foundation for the introduction of modern agro-technologies in Kyrgyzstan and contribute to the strengthening of international scientific co-operation in the agricultural sector.
