Construction of the Barskoon–Bedel road: survey work completed, tunnelling underway

Construction of the Barskoon–Bedel road is continuing in Kyrgyzstan. The project is being funded from the state budget, with construction scheduled to take five years.

Survey work for the project has already been fully completed, and the design is in its final stages – approvals are currently being sought from government bodies. At the same time, the contractor has set up the construction site: equipment has been delivered, a concrete plant has been built and workers have been mobilised.

Although the design work is still ongoing, construction is already underway. Active work is taking place on both tunnels. In the first tunnel, 49 specialists and 55 pieces of machinery are involved, and 15 metres have already been excavated. In the second tunnel, 13.2 metres of the main tunnel and 12 metres of the parallel adit have been excavated.

The total length of the road will be approximately 150 kilometres. It will connect the village of Barskoon on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul with the Bedel border crossing on the border with China.

The project involves the construction of two tunnels, more than 30 bridges, including two flyovers, as well as protective engineering structures. The project is expected to take approximately five years to complete.

As a reminder, Akchabar previously reported that the Barskoon-Bedel motorway project was officially launched on 27 August 2025 with the participation of President Sadyr Zhaparov. The road will strategically link Kyrgyzstan and China, reducing the route for freight transport by up to 500 km and cutting journey times by up to 12 hours.

Over three years, more than 53 billion KGS will be allocated to the construction of the Barskoon–Bedel motorway in Kyrgyzstan. In 2026, 17.68 billion KGS is earmarked, in 2027 – 17.86 billion, and in 2028 – 17.9 billion KGS.
The project involves the construction of two complex tunnels and will be key to transport links with China and the development of the country’s logistics sector. Thus, over three years, the total investment will amount to 53.44 billion KGS.
